Last week I had the pleasure of delivering a lecture at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź as part of the 18th International Triennial of Textile.
My lecture, “Tangible Memories: Reconstructions of Memory between Photography and Textile,” focused on the relational potential of both media and on the strategies of their mutual interpenetration. I examined photography and textile as socially grounded media that enable narratives of empowerment and diasporic community. In this context, I referred to the work of Adama Delphine Fawundu, Bisa Butler, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Raphaël Barontini, and Sasha Huber, whose artistic practices variously negotiate memory, archive, and representation through the media of textile and photography.
This event was also an important research moment for me—the lecture extended the scope of my doctoral project, reaching beyond its core framework. It became a space to test new interpretative threads and—hopefully—a contribution to further research on the materiality of memory and the relationality of the image.
My special thanks go to Magdalena Tuszyńska for the invitation, the exceptionally warm welcome, and the inspiring tour of the Triennial. I would also like to thank the entire Artistic Textile Department for the professional organization of the event.
Finally, my gratitude to all attendees for your attentiveness, thoughtful conversations, and the time we shared together!
